Green Building Certification

Energy Modeling

Building energy simulation, also called building energy modeling is the use of software to predict the energy use of a building. Energy models will output building energy use predictions in typical end-use categories: heating, cooling, lighting, fan, plug, process. In addition to energy units, most software includes utility rates input, and can predict energy costs.Energy-modeling is the virtual or computerized simulation of a building or complex that focuses on energy consumption, utility bills and life cycle costs of various energy related items such as air conditioning, lights and hot water.

Daylight Modeling

Daylighting is the art and science of managing natural light to minimize the use of artificial lighting, reduce carbon emissions, and positively affect the performance, mood and well being of occupants of any space. Designing, predicting, and planning for the impact of daylighting in a space is often misunderstood. Daylight modeling is a software or physical scale model calculation of interior light levels in a space, using specific sky scenarios, such as clear sky or overcast, or real world weather data files for a specific location.

Sunpath Analysis

Sun path diagrams are used to read the solar azimuth and altitude throughout the day and year for a given position on the earth. Sun path refers to the apparent significant seasonal-and-hourly positional changes of the sun (and length of daylight) as the Earth rotates, and orbits around the sun. The relative position of the sun is a major factor in the heat gain of buildings and in the performance of solar energy systems. It includes analyzing the impact of the sun on a site, as well as the building’s location, the spatial arrangement, orientation, window placement, daylight access and other design features.

Shadow Analysis

Shading is used in drawing for depicting levels of darkness on paper by applying media more densely or with a darker shade for darker areas, and less densely or with a lighter shade for lighter areas. Shading has proportionate effect on energy production. Shadow Analysis was created to help architects understand daylight conditions in dense urban area and provide them with a tool for designing better, more sustainable buildings and urban spaces.

CFD Analysis

Computational fluid dynamics, usually abbreviated as CFD, is a branch of fluid mechanics that uses numerical analysis and algorithms to solve and analyze problems that involve fluid flows. Computers are used to perform the calculations required to simulate the interaction of liquids and gases with surfaces defined by boundary conditions. CFD has also become a useful tool in the data center for analyzing thermal properties and modeling air flow. CFD software requires information about the size, content and layout of the data center. It uses this information to create a 3D mathematical model on a grid that can be rotated and viewed from different angles.

Building Commissioning

Building commissioning (Cx) is the process of verifying, in new construction, all (or some, depending on scope) of the subsystems for mechanical (HVAC), plumbing, electrical, fire/life safety, building envelopes, interior systems (example laboratory units), co-generation, utility plants, sustainable systems, lighting, wastewater, controls, and building security to achieve the owner’s project requirements as intended by the building owner and as designed by the building architects and engineers.

An energy audit is an inspection, survey and analysis of energy flows, for energy conservation in a building, process or system to reduce the amount of energy input into the system without negatively affecting the output(s). In commercial and industrial real estate, an energy audit is the first step in identifying opportunities to reduce energy expense and carbon footprints. An energy audit seeks to prioritize the energy uses according to the greatest to least cost effective opportunities for energy savings.

IAQ Consulting

Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a term which refers to the air quality within and around buildings and structures, especially as it relates to the health and comfort of building occupants. IAQ can be affected by gases (including carbon monoxide, radon, volatile organic compounds), particulates, microbial contaminants (mold, bacteria), or any mass or energy stressor that can induce adverse health conditions. Source control, filtration and the use of ventilation to dilute contaminants are the primary methods for improving indoor air quality in most buildings.
